A gurgling sound from a sink, toilet or drain is usually air being pushed back up the pipe — which normally means something further along the system is partially blocked, restricting normal flow.
Why it happens
Drains rely on a consistent flow of air alongside the water. When a blockage partly restricts a pipe, trapped air gets forced back through the water instead of escaping normally — that's the gurgle.
Is it urgent?
On its own, a gurgle usually isn't an emergency — but it's often an early warning sign of a blockage that's building up. Left alone, it can progress to slow draining and eventually a full blockage or backup.
Worth getting checked if
The gurgling is getting more frequent, is happening in more than one drain, or is accompanied by slow draining or odd smells — these suggest the blockage is developing rather than a one-off.
